Hebe – Goddess of Youth

Hebe – Goddess of Youth

Hebe the Greek Goddess of Youth, daughter of Hera and Zeus. Official cupbearer to the Gods until she tripped on her toga became topless and was fired by Apollo.

Her powers are among the most powerful in Mythology. Power to make a person feel youthful.

For me Hebe wines allow experimentation and freedom to try new practices and different winemaking techniques. I love the Greek myths, it’s characters and the stories of antiquity and so making wines akin to this era is kind of fun for me. I aim to make wines which are rustically charming, with a sense of freedom and individuality. The wines are unfined and made without additives, bar a touch of sulphur at bottling.

Hebe “white” is a naturally made using handpicked Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris grapes from our organic Southern Valley Vineyard in Marlborough and from old vine, dry farmed Mendoza grapes from the Hexton region of Gisborne. The hand-picked grapes are gently pressed then co-fermented with their own yeasts and bacteria in seasoned barrels and aged on their lees until bottling. The aromatics of the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris are complemented by the texture and weight of the Chardonnay….

Hebe ‘Red “is made naturally from a selection of clones of Pinot Noir hand picked from the Odyssey organic vineyard in Wrekin Road in the Southern valleys.

In this blend there is 10% carbonic maceration, and the wine is fermented with its own yeast and bacteria, aged in older French Puncheon and bottled without fining or filtration.
